WHAT IS THE REAL ID?
The REAL ID Act was passed all the way back in 2005—yeah, it’s been simmering for 20 years—but now, it’s finally being enforced for domestic flights only. A REAL ID is a state-issued driver’s license or identification card that meets federal security standards.
You’ll usually see a gold star or black star in the upper right corner of the card. That’s your clue that you have one.” If you don’t, then it will restrict your travel plans for 2025 and beyond.
WHAT HAPPENS ON MAY 7, 2025?
Yes, starting May 7, 2025, if you try to board a domestic flight in the U.S. and you’re over 18, you must have one of the following documents:
- A REAL ID or
- A valid U.S. passport
- Or another TSA-approved ID (like a military ID, Nexus card or permanent resident card)
But here’s the kicker:
Your regular driver’s license won’t cut it anymore. TSA will literally stop you at security if you show up with the wrong ID. In fact, you won’t even get to move past airport security.”
DO YOU ALREADY HAVE A REAL ID?
Wondering if you already have it? Let’s do this together. Take out your license right now. If it has a gold or black star in the top right hand corner, you’re golden. If it says ‘Not for Federal Identification’ or has no star at all—sorry, that’s a regular ID and you’ll need to upgrade it for travel.
HOW TO GET YOUR REAL ID
To get your REAL ID, you need to head to your state’s DMV in person. Let me say this real quick, though, every state has their own document rules as it pertains to the Real ID. But, you’ll usually need:
- Proof of identity (like a birth certificate or passport)
- Social Security card or tax form
- Two documents proving residency (like utility bills)
- Marriage certificate, if you got married after you got your current driver’s license
Hot tip: Make an appointment early—people are rushing now to line up, and some states already have 2–3 month wait times.
WHY THIS MATTERS FOR TRAVELERS
This rule affects every American traveler. It doesn’t matter if you’re just hopping from New York to Florida—TSA doesn’t care. No REAL ID? You’re not getting through airport security.
And for those of you traveling internationally—you’ll still need your passport for those trips, but a REAL ID makes domestic flights and even airport security clearance smoother. It also helps you get into government buildings easier.
BACKUP PLAN + BONUS TIP
No time to get to the DMV? Your U.S. passport will still work. If your license isn’t REAL ID compliant by May 7, just bring your passport for domestic flights. But, who wants to travel around with a passport that could get lost and cost much more to replace? I know I wouldn’t. So, it is just better to jump on the Real ID bandwagon. You can easily store it in a wallet or purse.
Also—here’s a travel hack: Some states let you upgrade during your regular license renewal process. So if your license is expiring soon, knock both things out at once.
