Don’t Let These 2025 Travel Rules Wreck Your Trip (Especially the New Real ID)!

April 23, 2025
Real ID rules

Let me paint a picture: you’ve planned the perfect vacation—flights booked, hotel reserved, itinerary jam-packed with bucket-list experiences—and then, boom, your trip hits a brick wall because of one tiny rule you didn’t know about. 😱

2025 is full of sneaky travel changes, and one of the biggest ones people are STILL ignoring is the Real ID requirement. But don’t worry—I’ve got your back. Let’s break down the latest rules that could ruin your trip before you even reach your gate, and how to stay one step ahead.

1. The Real ID Deadline Is Real (This Time)

Let’s start with the one that’s been delayed more times than a budget airline flight: Real ID. But here’s the deal—May 7, 2025, is the official, no-excuses, it’s-really-happening deadline.

If you plan to fly domestically within the U.S., you must have a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or another TSA-approved form of ID. Regular licenses just won’t cut it anymore.

You can recognize a Real ID by the star on the upper right corner of your driver’s license. If yours doesn’t have it, it’s time to visit your DMV. Trust me, you don’t want to be that person at security being turned away while your boarding group is already on the plane.

Here’s the kicker: not all states issue Real ID by default. You have to specifically request it at your local DMV, bring additional documents, and yes, sometimes wait in an endless line. So double-check your ID now, because showing up at the airport with the wrong one means you’re not flying anywhere.

2. Passport Validity Rules Could Derail Your Dream Trip

Have you ever heard about someone flying all the way to Europe only to be sent back because their passport was “too close to expiring”?

Yep. That happens. A lot.

Like the Real ID, many countries require your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date—and this includes much of Europe, Asia, and South America.

Even if you’re only going for a quick weekend getaway, your passport better be good for another half year after you return. According to the U.S. Department of State, this is one of the top reasons travelers are denied entry.

Pro Tip: Set a calendar reminder nine months before your passport expires so you can renew it early—without the last-minute stress.

3. The TSA PreCheck + CLEAR Combo Is a Game-Changer

Want to breeze through airport security like a VIP? Get TSA PreCheck. It lets you keep your shoes, belt, and light jacket on while your liquids and laptop stay tucked neatly in your bag. No digging, no stress.

TSA PreCheck is just $78 for five years—that’s only $15.60 per year. According to official TSA stats, in February 2024, 93% of PreCheck travelers waited less than 5 minutes at security. Add CLEAR (which uses biometrics to skip the document check), and you’re basically teleporting.

Like the Real ID, just don’t forget—PreCheck isn’t automatic. That little logo on your boarding pass only shows up after you complete the application and attend your in-person appointment.

4. Traveling With Kids? Know These Rules or Regret It

Parents, listen up—this one’s big like the Real ID. For domestic flights, kids under 18 don’t need an ID when traveling with an adult. But for international travel, they must have their own passport—yes, even babies.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection says missing or incorrect child documentation is the #1 cause of delays for families at international borders.

And if you’re traveling with someone else’s child—or sharing custody—you’ll need a signed consent letter from the absent parent. No letter? You might face serious questioning, delays, or even denial of entry.

Also, many airlines ask for birth certificates for lap infants on domestic flights to verify their age. Don’t assume your smiling baby gets a free pass.

5. The 3-1-1 Liquids Rule Isn’t Going Anywhere

Yes, there’s always talk about the Real ID and also TSA changing the liquids rule. But as of now? The 3-1-1 rule is alive and well.

That means:

  • 3.4 oz (100ml) or less per container

  • All containers must fit in one quart-size clear bag

  • One bag per passenger

According to TSA, liquids violations are still the #1 reason for bag delays and inspections and the REAL ID is to not have the ability to board a flight. Every single day, airports toss out 30+ gallons of oversized liquids.

And no, the rules don’t care how expensive your lotion is. That fancy $80 serum will be trashed just like the $3 drugstore bottle if it’s over the limit.

Exceptions: Medications and baby formula are allowed in larger sizes—but you have to declare them. Watch this video to learn about flying with medication and what to expect.

6. Airport Arrival Time Could Make or Break Your Trip

Here’s a simple rule that could save your whole trip: arrive early.

The TSA recommends getting to the airport 2 hours before domestic flights and 3 hours before international flights. During peak seasons (summer, holidays, spring break), add at least an hour.

Some checkpoints see over 70,000 travelers in a single day. That’s a whole lot of waiting if you show up late. PreCheck helps, but it won’t save you from traffic, long check-in lines, or parking issues.

Not arriving early and not having a REAL ID or passport or even TSA Precheck is cutting it close and some of the top reasons people miss their flights—and that’s a heartbreak you don’t need.
