So, here’s what went down. A traveler booked a flight with a layover, planning to get off at the connecting city instead of taking the final leg of the trip. But when they checked in at the airport, the airline agent took one look at their ID—saw that they lived in the layover city—and immediately flagged their reservation. The agent straight-up told them they were suspected of skiplagging and warned that if they skipped the last leg of the flight, they could be banned from American Airlines altogether.

Now, the passenger took the risk anyway. They didn’t board the final flight, but whether or not they got banned remains a mystery. And they’re not the only ones getting caught either.

Another traveler tried to pull off the same trick, but this time, things got even trickier. When they went to check in, the system blocked them and told them to see an agent. Turns out, the airline had linked their home address to their reservation and knew they were trying to skip the last flight. The agent gave them a choice: either take the full flight itinerary or risk getting permanently flagged. Not wanting to lose their frequent flyer status, they played it safe, took the final flight, and booked a separate ticket home instead. But this got them thinking—could changing their address in the system help them avoid getting caught next time?

That just goes to show—airlines are watching. They’re using advanced technology, tracking passenger patterns, and going out of their way to shut down this loophole. But why do they care so much?

If you’ve never heard of hidden city ticketing, here’s the deal: airlines often charge more for nonstop flights than they do for routes with layovers. For example, say you want to fly from New York to Denver, but it’s cheaper to book a flight from New York to Denver to Colorado Springs. You’d just get off in Denver and skip the last leg. Same thing if you want to go to Phoenix, but it’s cheaper to book a flight to Tucson with a layover in Phoenix—you just hop off in Phoenix and call it a day. Simple, right?

Well, not so fast. Airlines hate this trick because they see it as lost revenue. And they’re doing everything they can to stop passengers from using it. But here’s where it gets interesting: hidden city ticketing isn’t illegal. It does break airline policy, though. And if you get caught, there are consequences.

The Risks of Hidden City Ticketing

First, let’s talk about rerouting. If your original flight gets delayed or canceled, the airline might put you on a different route, completely messing up your plan to get off at the layover city. Instead of landing where you wanted, you could end up somewhere totally unexpected. And guess what? At that point, you’re stuck.

Then, there’s the baggage issue. If you check a bag, it’s going all the way to the final destination on your ticket, not your layover city. That means unless you’re traveling with just a carry-on, this trick won’t work for you. And even if you are carrying everything onboard, there’s another problem: overhead bins fill up. And let’s not forget, every time you buy a ticket, you’re agreeing to the airline’s terms and conditions. If they catch you breaking their policies, they can and will take action—whether that’s canceling your account, revoking your miles, or even banning you from flying with them altogether.

Now, some people argue that airlines are being too harsh. After all, once you’ve paid for your seat, shouldn’t you be able to use it however you want? Others say airlines are just protecting their bottom line. Either way, this is a travel hack that’s becoming harder and harder to pull off.

And here’s another thing to consider: airlines aren’t just cracking down at check-in. Some have even sent passengers bills after they skipped flights, demanding they pay the fare difference.
