Today, I’m going to walk you through some travel outfits you should definitely avoid wearing to the airport (or on the airplane!). Whether you’re gearing up for a short domestic flight or a long-haul flight, what you wear can make or break your journey. I’ll break down why certain outfits can be a hassle and help you create a go-to travel ensemble that’s practical, comfortable, and TSA-friendly.
Are you ready to get the inside scoop from someone who has hopped on and off hundreds of flights and knows what she is talking about? Yes, I have some chops, if I may say so myself. Just kidding around. But, in all seriousness now, let’s dive right in. And, we are going to begin from the feet up. So, shoes first.
Shoes: Skip the Complicated Ones
When it comes to shoes, comfort and convenience are your top priorities. Forget the fancy heels, boots, or any footwear that requires a complicated fastening system. Airport security is stressful enough without having to fight with laces or tight shoes. You need something that you can slip on and off quickly without making a scene.
I recommend versatile walking shoes—ones that can easily loosen for security, tighten for a snug fit, and even loosen again if your feet start to swell mid-flight (trust me, this happens!). I personally wear the Brooks Ghost 16 for travel, but honestly, any well-made walking or running shoe will do the trick.
Pro tip: If you’re concerned about TSA rules, don’t worry about gel insoles. I checked, and they’re fine to bring through security!
Socks: Don’t Just Grab Any Pair
To add to your travel outfits, you should remember that we all need socks so as to avoid walking barefoot across the airport floor at security, but not all socks are made equal. For longer flights (anything over two hours), compression socks are a must. They help boost blood circulation and prevent swelling in your legs and feet, which is a huge help when you’re stuck in your seat for hours. Plus, they lower the risk of blood clots—definitely a bonus!
Compression socks are easy to find online, and you only need one or two pairs that you can wash and reuse for your trips.
Underwear: A Small Detail That Makes a Big Difference
Now, let’s talk about something a bit unexpected—underwear liners. This simple hack will keep you feeling fresh during your travels. I suggest using a liner for the first leg of your flight and tossing it before your second. It’s a small step but can make a big difference in how comfortable you feel. Trust me, this is a game changer on long travel days!
Pants: Go for Comfort, Not Style
When choosing pants for the airport, you want something that’s comfortable, easy to move in, and won’t make you regret your choice halfway through the flight. Pants with an elastic waistband are ideal since you won’t have to worry about removing a belt at security.
Skip anything too tight or constricting, like jeans.
These can be uncomfortable after hours of sitting and might leave you feeling bloated—definitely not ideal if you’re not used to being cramped up in a plane seat for an extended period. I also try to completely avoid wearing wide-legged pants, dresses, or skirts. Wanna know why? Well, these can get caught on conveyor belts or escalators, which is not only scary but dangerous.
I personally love Merino Wool Base Layer Leggings for travel. They’re stretchy, dark-colored (hello, no stains!), and they have a hidden waistband pocket perfect for stashing essentials like your passport. The Merino wool fabric helps regulate body temperature and resists wrinkles and odors, which makes it perfect for long flights.
Pro tip: Avoid jumpsuits or rompers when it comes to choosing travel outfits —unless you want to deal with the struggle of using a cramped airport restroom.
Tops: Layering is Key
One thing to add to your travel outfits are layers. Layering is essential no matter when you’re traveling. Think about how you feel when you’re inside a chilly airport on a hot day—now imagine how cold you could get on a plane. Make sure your base layer is comfy and easy to remove if you need to take off your outer layers at security.
A high-neck T-shirt paired with a zip-up jacket is my go-to combo as it relates to travel outfits. The high neck keeps you covered and comfortable, especially when you’re bending over to take your shoes off at security. Dark colors are a must here too—these can hide any unexpected spills and prevent you from reflecting back at the seatback screens (yes, that’s a thing).
Jackets: Go for Practicality Over Style
When it comes to jackets, avoid anything with too many buttons or zippers that could slow you down at security. I prefer a zip-up jacket with a hood and pockets. The zip-up design is perfect for adjusting your temperature mid-flight, and the hood can provide some extra privacy if you want to zone out for a while.
One of the travel outfits to consider is a jacket.
A jacket like this is also helpful at airport security. Instead of throwing your valuables into the screening bin, you can store your phone, wallet, and headphones in your jacket’s pockets. When you pass through security, simply remove the jacket, place it in the bin, and you’ll be good to go without losing any of your essentials.
Accessories: Keep it Simple
When it comes to accessories, keep it low-key. Small rings, necklaces, or watches shouldn’t be a problem at security. However, larger pieces of jewelry might require removal. And unless you want to hassle with removing a hat at security, avoid wearing one.
If you wear glasses, you can keep them on, but sunglasses need to be removed and placed in the screening bin. And if you wear contacts, it might be worth switching to glasses for long flights, as the dry air can make contacts uncomfortable.
Pro tip: Protect your skin! You’re exposed to more UV rays when flying at higher altitudes, so make sure to wear sunscreen, especially on your face.
Final Outfit Recap
To sum it up, here’s what I recommend wearing on your next travel day:
- Shoes: Comfy walking shoes that are easy to remove.
- Socks: Compression socks for longer flights.
- Pants: Stretchy leggings or sweatpants with an elastic waistband.
- Tops: A high-neck T-shirt and zip-up jacket with pockets.
- Accessories: Minimal jewelry and glasses if needed.
- Extras: Sunscreen, wrinkle-release spray, and a Tide stick for any spills.
Also, make sure to pack a spare change of clothes in your personal item bag. And don’t forget those small essentials like a Tide stick and wrinkle-release spray—you never know when you’ll need them.
Avoid Wearing Anything Too Tight or Restrictive
If you’ve ever tried to squeeze into a pair of skinny jeans or a form-fitting dress for a long flight, you know how uncomfortable that can get. When you’re seated for hours, tight clothing can cause circulation problems and discomfort. This is especially true if you eat or drink things that might make you a little bloated.
Instead, opt for looser, more comfortable clothes like joggers or leggings. These will move with you, and you won’t feel restricted. Plus, you’ll look relaxed and stylish at the same time! Yes, this is one of the travel outfits to add to your arsenal.
Say No to High Heels
High heels is one of the travel outfitst to avoid. Heels may look great for a day out, but they’re a definite no-go for travel. Not only are they uncomfortable for long walks in the airport, but they can also be dangerous if you need to rush in an emergency. Imagine trying to run to your gate in stilettos—ouch! Flats, sneakers, or even slip-on shoes are your best bet. They’ll keep you comfy while you’re navigating the airport and also help you stay balanced in the event of turbulence on the plane.
Avoid Wearing Anything with Too Many Layers
When you’re heading to the airport, the goal is simplicity when it comes to travel outfits. While layering is important, wearing too many layers can be a hassle. Not only will you have to strip down during the security check, but you’ll also have to deal with managing all those layers during the flight. Keep it simple with a base layer and one outer layer that you can easily add or remove as needed.
Skip Overly Casual or Sloppy Outfits
While comfort is key, you also want to avoid looking like you rolled out of bed when you step off the plane. While it might be tempting to wear sweatpants and an oversized hoodie for ultimate comfort, try to opt for something that’s polished yet comfortable. A pair of tailored leggings or a soft T-shirt with a stylish jacket can give you that “casual chic” vibe without feeling sloppy.
Opt for a Crossbody Bag or Backpack
When it comes to carrying your essentials, backpacks or crossbody bags are your best friends. Avoid large handbags or anything too bulky that might get in your way while navigating the security checkpoint. A crossbody bag allows you to keep your hands free while still having everything you need within reach. This is one of the ensembles to feeling complete when wearing your travel outfits. Plus, they’re easy to keep track of during the flight, and they won’t take up too much space in the overhead compartment.
Don’t Forget to Pack a Lightweight Scarf or Shawl
Airplanes can be chilly, especially during longer flights or when the air conditioning is cranked up high. A lightweight scarf or shawl can come in handy for adding warmth without taking up too much space. It’s also an easy way to add a touch of style to your outfit. A neutral-colored scarf can be folded and tucked into your bag without much effort, but it can be draped over your shoulders when you need an extra layer.
Bring a Hat for Sun Protection (Not Just Fashion)
While many hats are a pain during airport security, they serve an important function when you’re flying, especially for long-haul flights. A hat can help protect your face from the sun’s harmful UV rays, particularly if you’re seated by the window or on a daytime flight. Keep it simple with a wide-brimmed hat or a baseball cap, which can be removed quickly when you go through security. It might also look nice with some of your travel outfits.
Consider Comfortable, Stretchy Layers for the Flight
For the flight itself, I always opt for stretchy fabrics that won’t dig into me when I’m sitting for hours. This can be especially helpful if you plan on trying to sleep or if you’re planning to have a snack (which will likely make you feel bloated). A stretchy T-shirt, soft hoodie, or light sweater can make a world of difference in your comfort level as it relates to travel outfits.
Avoid Anything Too Flashy or Loud
Traveling can be stressful, and if you wear travel outifts with bold patterns or bright colors, it might make you stand out more than you’d like. Airports are already chaotic enough without drawing unnecessary attention. Stick to neutral tones and simple patterns that won’t attract unwanted gazes, and you’ll feel much more comfortable. Plus, your outfit won’t reflect back at you on the flight’s entertainment screen (a small but helpful benefit!).
Keep Travel-Sized Items Handy
Sometimes, spills happen, or you might need a quick refresher mid-flight. A travel-sized wrinkle release spray or stain remover like a Tide pen can save you from a wardrobe mishap. You can also carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer, especially after touching shared surfaces, or a lip balm to combat the dry airplane air.
Hydrate Before and During the Flight
Though not technically a tip about travel outfits, staying hydrated is just as important as what you wear. Dry airplane cabins can dehydrate you, which can make you feel sluggish and uncomfortable. Drink plenty of water before and during the flight to avoid feeling tired and irritable. Plus, staying hydrated can help reduce swelling in your feet and legs!
Leave the Fragrance at Home
While you might love wearing perfume or cologne, the confined space of an airplane is not the best place for heavy scents. Some passengers might be sensitive to strong fragrances, and the air can make them smell even more intense. It’s a good idea to skip the heavy fragrance and opt for unscented lotions or deodorants instead, ensuring that you’re comfortable without causing any discomfort for others.
